Somewhere in the Kabbala, mystical Jewish laws, it is written that a Kabbalist who has believed and behaved dutifully according to the law, will be rewarded in this life. So the story goes, one pious man buried two eggs. He prayed over them dilligently, and after the expected period of time had elapsed, he unearthed them. Lo and behold, one egg had turned to gold! He might have had two golden eggs, but he had been only half good - or so was the story my father told me.
