About the artist:
Werner Gottsmann (1924–2004), born in Schönheide (Saxony), was a noted German painter and graphic artist.
During World War II, he was captured by the Russians and imprisoned for four years. Once the war ended, he traveled to Zwickau before studying painting and graphics at the Robert Schumann Academy in Düsseldorf. In 1953 he studied graphic arts in Berlin.
He worked as a book and poster graphic artist in the former GDR from 1956 to 1971, where he designed numerous film posters for DEFA's Progress Film-Verleih. In addition to a large number of individual and group exhibitions, he was represented at nearly all German art exhibitions from 1958 on.
He won several awards for his posters, earning him a place as one of the co-founders of GDR poster art. Among his awards were one he received at the Poster Biennale in Warsaw in 1984.
Gottsmann also taught at the technical school for applied arts in Potsdam in the 1950s, and at the master school for interior design in Berlin.
