Description
This is an image of Okie Dokie General Store in Salisbury, NC. Salisbury is an area in North Carolina with a very rich history. This business, this general store's property was built in 1921. The general store was the meeting place, the center of activity in the early 1900's. Every community the small hometown USA communities all had a general store. They were hardware stores, clothiers, and catalog sales for items they did not carry in the store. The rule of thumb was if the general store does not carry it they can get it. The only thing I wish it had was a few benches or chairs and some older men sitting around taking about the local events of interest.

Nice find! You can find many of these type of places in and around the Catskills, but I'm glad to hear they are surviving in other parts of the country as well. Very interesting history, and the fact there aren't any people around speaks volumes as well.

What a great find Chris. Perfect use of black and white to hightlight this dissappearing type of store. sharing

They original name of the store was O.O. Rufty's General store. They first "O" i believe stood for Okey. When the current owners opened the store they renamed it Okey Dokey.

Wow old shops are magical...makes me pine to be in another, simpler time.....great work

thank you Sarah. I feel the same way. Have you ever noticed that old shops like this one all have the same peculiar smell to them. Not a bad smell but unique.

You know what I find funny about this name, Chris? When I was young, in my family (being raised in an exclusively French milieu), we would answer "Okey Dokey" when we agreed to do something, even if I didn't say an English word at that time. Was I saying it alwright?
Flees Photos replied:
Yes, Okey Dokey is English slang for ok or alright. Usually used in the deep southern states in the US.
