Chipmunks have cheeks that contain pouches, or pockets, designed to hold their food while they are foraging. The pouches can stretch up to three times the size of the small rodent’s head. Chipmunks are not very active during hot, windy or rainy weather. These fast little creatures might not venture from their dens or burrows in July and August in response to scarce food and hot temperatures. They hibernate in the winter with their cache of stored food in their dens or burrows. This little one is eating and also storing up for winter. Love the capture of this beautiful little chipmunk, Kathy! He reminds me of the chipmunk that showed up for a couple of weeks to eat bird seed with the birds and squirrels that I feed daily. L/F
