Black vultures are common scavenging birds which live throughout the Americas from central North America to southern South America. They tend to congregate in groups which may contain several thousand individuals. They are frequent in built-up areas in poorer regions where they scavenge from refuse heaps. They are not fussy about their diet, and will eat practically anything. Despite the revulsion this causes in areas, black vultures provide an admirable waste-disposal service in filthy slums.
