Description
This is an image of an American Bison. I know many people are going to look at this post and ask one of two questions. Isnt that a buffalo or what is the difference between a bison and a buffalo.
Throughout American history the bison has been mistakenly identified as a buffalo. The main difference between a buffalo and a bison is buffalo's are found in Africa and Asia only and the Bison is only found in North America.
That said the bison was nearly hunted into extinction by the beginning of the 20 century. Some figures estimate that there was less than 1000 animals surviving into the 20th century. When you read historic books about buffalo hunts in north america, they are specifically talking about bison.
Today North Americas largest mammal numbers have rebounded and some animals have been domesticated. The North American Herd now totals in the neighborhood of 350,000 animals not including those on domestic farms.
Pictured in this image is the Alfa bison an old an ornery male. Make no mistake if this animal suspected you were trying to hurt the herd you would be attacked.
