Description
This is an image of meadow Hawkweed (Hieracium caespitosum). This image was captured in South Carolina. When meadow Hawkweed is in bloom it has yellow flowers that somewhat resemble that of small dandelion flowers in color with squarish petals. The plants thrive in soil that is very poor rocky or sandy where there is little competition from other native plants.
This image was taken at the end of summer right at the beginning of the fall. The lovely yellow flowers have closed and the metamorphosis into seed is well under way. The seeds are carried on the white cotton like plume. The parent plant continues its annual growth from the rhizomes. When the wind blows in the fall you will see their seeds blow off in abundance and can almost resemble snow blowing around in fields.
